What is Zidoval gel and how does it work?

Zidoval gel is a medicine used in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. It contains metronidazole, a type of antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. This medicine is used to destroy the bacteria responsible for the infection and the symptoms that come with it which may include unusual discharge, itching and burning around the vagina or when you urinate, and a strong vaginal odour. It kills the bacteria by interfering with and damaging its DNA so the bacteria can’t replicate and multiply, this eventually clears up the infection. Zidoval gel is an effective BV treatment if used correctly.

Who is Zidoval gel suitable for?

This medicine is suitable for use in adults over the age of 18 years who have been diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis. It’s important that you’ve had this diagnosis before buying treatment, as there are other vaginal infections similar to BV that can’t be treated with Zidoval such as thrush. If you’ve had a BV diagnosis, Zidoval gel may be a suitable treatment to help you get rid of the infection.

Who is this treatment not suitable for?

Although you may have the right diagnosis, Zidoval gel may not be suitable for you for a number of reasons. In some circumstances, this medicine will not be suitable and you should not use the gel if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are allergic to metronidazole or any other ingredient in this medicine
  • You are allergic to any similar nitroimidazole antibacterials
  • You are allergic to parabens

Allergic reactions can be severe and life-threatening and may need emergency medical attention, so it’s important to avoid this medicine altogether if you’re aware that you have an allergy to it.

Before you go ahead and start this treatment, always speak to your doctor or pharmacist first if you have any other health conditions or are taking any other medication. This is particularly important if you have the following:

  • Ever had any blood problems or a disease affecting the blood
  • You have or think you may have vaginal thrush
  • You’re on your period
  • You’re having a blood test - this medicine may affect the results
  • Can I treat BV with Zidoval gel while pregnant?

It’s possible to develop bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy and in a small number of cases if may cause complications but this isn’t the case for the majority of pregnant women with BV. However, if you suspect you have bacterial vaginosis or you’ve had a change in discharge you should see your nurse or doctor right away for treatment, particularly if you’re pregnant. You will need to seek the advice of your doctor when it comes to treating BV in pregnancy, Zidoval gel will need to be prescribed by your doctor to ensure it’s safe for you to use, the same applies if you are breastfeeding.

Can I use Zidoval gel while taking other medications?

Again, you will need to inform your doctor or pharmacist about any other medications you’re taking or let us know in your consultation. This includes any prescription, non-prescription or even herbal medicines that you may be taking. This is to ensure that there isn’t a risk of Zidoval gel interacting with your medication or vice versa. There is a possibility Zidoval may interact with the following medicines and taking these with Zidoval should be avoided:

    • Coumarin anticoagulants such as warfarin
    • Lithium
    • Cyclosporin
    • 5-fluorouracil

Always inform your doctor before starting this treatment if you’re taking any of these medicines.

What are the side effects of Zidoval gel?

All medicines have side effects but not everyone will experience them. If you do experience any side effects that are bothersome or you’re unable to bear them, do speak to your doctor about alternative treatments. Some of the most common side effects with this medicine that affect around 1 in 10 people include:

    • Headache
    • Dizziness
    • Stomach cramps
    • Vomiting
    • Decreased appetite
    • Unpleasant taste in your mouth
    • Unusual feeling on your tongue
    • Skin irritation such as dryness, redness, itching, burning, pain, or stinging
    • Vaginal thrush
    • Vaginal discharge
    • Discomfort around the pelvis

Some of the more uncommon side effects may include feeling irritable, tired, or depressed, some bowel problems such as constipation or diarrhoea, changes in periods such as spotting or bleeding in between periods, and the possibility of urinary tract infection. These side effects are not so common but do speak to your doctor if these side effects occur or any others that are listed on the patient information leaflet.

If you experience any sign of allergic reaction stop using the gel immediately and seek medical help straight away.

Precautions to take with Zidoval gel

    • Always use this gel as directed, stick to the recommended dose and complete the course entirely to ensure that the infection has fully cleared. Avoid prolonged or unnecessary use of this medicine
    • While using the gel and while you have the infection, avoid sexual intercourse
    • Avoid drinking alcohol while using this gel as it can increase the risk of side effects and cause sickness, confusion, headache, and a fast heartbeat

How to use Zidoval vaginal gel

Zidoval gel is applied inside the vagina and it should not be used anywhere else. The recommended dose for adults over the age of 18 is one 5g application inserted into the vagina once daily at bedtime, for 5 days.

    Before using Zidoval gel:

    • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching any of the product
    • Use a fresh applicator for each dose
    • Throw away the applicator after you’ve used it, do not reuse the applicators

    Using Zidoval gel:

Firstly, remove the cap from the tube and pierce the seal, then screw together the applicator and tube. You should then squeeze the tube gently until the applicator is filled with your dose of Zidoval gel, once this is done, remove the applicator and put the cap back on the tube. You’ll now need to gently insert the applicator into the vagina by holding the applicator by the barrel and gently push it in as far as it will go. When the applicator is inside the vagina, push the plunger down slowly to release the gel, continue to push down on the plunger until it stops to ensure you’ve released all of the gel into the vagina.

One this is done you can remove the applicator from your vagina and dispose of it immediately and safely. Repeat these steps for 5 consecutive days at bedtime. Do not stop treatment too early as there is a risk of the infection coming back even if you feel better.
