Zolmitriptan (Generic Zomig)

Please note: Brand received may vary

Zolmitriptan is a popular migraine treatment which belongs to a class of medications known as triptans. Triptans essentially work by reversing the changes in the brain which can cause migraines.

Migraine symptoms are often caused by swollen blood vessels in the head. Zolmitriptan tablets can be taken to reduce the widening of these blood vessels, which helps to reduce migraine symptoms such as having a headache, feelings of sickness and sensitivity to light and sound. Zolmitriptan is also sold under the brand name Zomig.

Branded vs Generic What's the difference?

Generic Name - Each medicine has an approved name called the generic name. A group of medicines that have similar actions often have similar-sounding generic names. For examples, phenoxymethlpenicillin, ampicillin, amoxicillin and flucloxacillin are in one group of antibiotics.

Brand (Trade) Name - Many medicines also have one or more bran names. This is chosen by the company that makes it. Several companies may make the same generic medicine, each with their own brand name. The name is often chosen to be memorable for advertising, or to be easier to say of spell than the generic name. For example, paracetamol is a generic name. There are several companies that make this with the brand names such as Panadol, Calpol etc

What Is Zolmitriptan?

Zolmitriptan tablets are a popular choice of migraine treatment. They belong to a class of medications known as triptans. Triptans are not the same as painkillers, instead they work by reversing the changes in the brain which can cause migraines. By reversing these changes, Zolmitriptan works to treat the cause of the migraine as well as reducing the symptoms. Zolmitriptan is the generic version of the medicine known as Zomig.

Bear in mind that zolmitriptan tablets are designed to be taken after a migraine attack has started. This treatment will not stop you from experiencing such attacks but it can help to put a stop to symptoms when a migraine attack does occur.

How does Zolmitriptan Work?

Zolmitriptan works by stimulating what are called serotonin (or 5HT) receptors which are found in the brain. Manipulating these receptors influences the width of blood vessels in the brain, which is important because inflamed and swollen blood vessels are a common issue linked to migraines.

By narrowing the blood vessels which have become wider due to a migraine, symptoms of the condition should be reduced. Symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound should be removed thanks to the efforts of zolmitriptan.

Who can use Zolmitriptan?

While zolmitriptan tablets are designed to be taken by adults susceptible to migraine attacks, there are certain health-related circumstances which may make them unsuitable to take.

You should NOT take zolmitriptan tablets and seek alternative treatment if any of the following apply:

  • You have high blood pressure
  • You are aged below 18 or above 65
  • You have or have previously had heart problems including angina or a heart attack
  • You have experience heart related symptoms such as shortness of breath or pressure in the chest (see a doctor about these if you haven’t already)
  • You have previously experienced a stroke or short-lasting symptoms similar to a stroke (known as transient ischaemic attack or TIA)
  • If you are already taking other medicines for treating your migraine, then you may not be able to use zolmitriptan as well. You should certainly avoid taking them too close together timewise (something you can consult a doctor or your patient information leaflet about). Examples of other treatments include ergotamine, other ergot-type medicines or other triptans.

Ask your doctor, nurse or local pharmacist for advice if you have any other health conditions besides those listed above or you are either pregnant or breast-feeding. You should also disclose any other medicines you are currently taking, since certain ones can have interactions with zolmitriptan. The effects of zolmitriptan or the other medicine you are taking could be influenced when mixed together.

In particular, it’s important to highlight before using zolmitriptan if you are taking any of the following:

  • Other medicines for treating migraines. If you have been prescribed another migraine treatment alongside zolmitriptan, then you should leave at least a 24-hour gap between taking zolmitriptan and the other migraine medicine.
  • Medicines used for treating depression such as mono-amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
  • Cimetidine (for treating indigestion or stomach ulcers)
  • Any quinolone antibiotics (such as ciprofloxacin)
  • Herbal remedies such as St John’s Wort

Instructions for using Zolmitriptan

Zolmitriptan is available in strengths of 2.5mg and 5mg. Whichever strength is prescribed; the recommended dose is to take one tablet at onset of migraine. You can repeat the dose after at least 2 hours have passed if required. However, if the first dose has no effect on your symptoms, tell your doctor first and they may prescribe alternative treatment.

These tablets should be swallowed whole and it’s recommended you take them with a drink of water. Do not take more than two tablets within a single day, unless your doctor gives their approval to do so.

Can Zolmitriptan cause side effects?

As is with the case with any other medication you could be prescribed, there is some possibility that Zolmitriptan can cause side effects. However, not every patient who uses this medicine notices them and it is only prolonged or severe side effects which you need to worry about. If you notice symptoms of an allergic reaction, angina, bleeding in the brain or a stroke, then stop taking zolmitriptan and seek medical attention (such issues linked with this medicine are considered very rare).

The following possible side effects are listed as common within the patient information leaflet for zolmitriptan:

  • Sleepiness or dizziness
  • Uneven heart beat
  • Abnormal sensations such as tingling in your fingers and toes or skin that is sensitive to touch
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Muscle weakness/pain
