What is Zolpidem and what does it do?

Zolpidem, which can also be prescribed as the branded medicine Ambien, is a fast acting sleeping tablet. It is prescribed primarily to help with temporary and short term sleep problems, such as difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep.

Zolpidem belongs to a group of medicines called hypnotics. It works by affecting the GABA receptors in the brain. GABA is an acid that is found naturally in the body where it has a sedative effect. When taken orally, Zolpidem increases the sedative effect of GABA.

When is Zolpidem prescribed?

Zolpidem and Ambien may be prescribed to help patients with short term insomnia. In short, insomnia is a condition affecting sleep and the quality of sleep. Symptoms of insomnia may include:

  • Difficulty falling asleep.
  • Waking up several times during the night.
  • Waking up early in the morning and not being able to go back to sleep.
  • Not feeling refreshed when getting up.
  • Feeling tired during the day and having difficulty concentrating.

Zolpidem should be prescribed for short term use only.

Is Zolpidem suitable for my condition?

Our doctor will use the information you provide through the medical questionnaire to determine whether Zolpidem is right for you. Certain conditions and medicines may affect the suitability of this treatment, so it is important that you answer all of the doctor’s questions when you request your prescription.

Zolpidem may not be prescribed

if any of the following applies to you:

  • If you have breathing difficulties.
  • If you have severe liver problems.
  • If you are under the age of 18.

Note: Dependence has been reported in a small number of patients. It is important that you tell the doctor through the medical questionnaire if you: have a personality disorder, have ever been or are currently being treated for drug or alcohol abuse or think you may not be able to stop taking Zolpidem to treat your sleep problems.

Can I reduce the risk of getting side effects?

Yes. Always read the patient information leaflet thoroughly before use as this can help reduce the risk of side effects and interactions between medicines. Below are a few things you can do:
