Over the last 12 months (ending August 2019), Brevinor was prescribed 22,403 times by NHS England. This combined oral contraceptive pill is designed to be taken at the same time every day for 21 days, followed by a pill-free week, where no pills should be taken for 7 days. You should then continue with this cycle. Always take Brevinor exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Cilest 

From September 2018 to August 2019, Cilest was prescribed 186,810 times by the NHS in England. Cilest should be taken in the same way as Brevinor (above). Take one pill at the same time each day for 21 days followed by 7 pill-free days. In the last year ending August 2019, Cimizt appeared on 3,956 prescriptions from NHS England. Dianette

Over the last year (Sept 2018 - August 2019), NHS England has prescribed Dianette 25,036 times. This combined contraceptive pill should be taken at the same time every day for 21 days, before taking a 7-day break (where no pills are taken). This process should then be repeated after the 7 days are up. Eloine

Between September 2018 and August 2019, Eloine featured on 8,018 of NHS England’s prescriptions. This medication comes in blister strips that contain 28 pills in total; 24 active light pink tablets and 4 white placebo pills. You should take 1 active light pink tablet at the same time every day for 24 days, then over the next 4 days, take the white placebo pills (one a day). Femodene 

From September 2018 to August 2019, 41,669 Femodene prescriptions were dispensed by NHS England. Femodene is similar to many other combined contraceptive pills as it should be taken for 21 days in a row, followed by a pill-free week. Femodene ED 

In this comparison of combined contraceptive pills, we also include the ED versions of pills where available. The difference between Femodene and Femodene ED is that the ED version contains 7 inactive or ‘dummy’ pills which should be taken instead of having a 7-day break. In the last year (ending August 2019) NHS England prescribed Femodene ED 3,346 times

Femodette

Femodette is a combined contraceptive pill which should be taken for 21 days, followed by 7 pill-free days. Gedarel 

Gedarel is a combined hormonal contraceptive pill that was prescribed by NHS England 90,101 times between August 2018 and September 2019. To ensure effective contraception, Gedarel should be taken once at around the same time each day for 21 days. Katya 

Katya is a form of combined contraceptive pill that’s frequently prescribed in the UK as a form of birth control. It should be taken for 21 days at around the same time each day and then stopped for 7 days, before continuing (on the 8th day) with the next pill packet. Levest 

The combined contraceptive pill Levest was prescribed 165,452 times by NHS England in the last 12 months (ending August 2019). This medication should be taken for 21 days (at around the same time each day), followed by a 7-day pill-free week for effective birth control. Lizinna 

Lizinna is a form of combined hormonal contraceptive pill that was prescribed 12,086 times by NHS England between September 2018 and August 2019. As with many of the other pills in this guide, Lizinna should be taken for 21 days and stopped for the next 7 days before resuming the medication from the next packet. Loestrin 30 

Loestrin 30 contains the same active substances as Loestrin 20, but is slightly stronger, meaning that it may be more likely to cause side effects than it’s weaker version. Norinyl-1

Norinyl-1 can be compared to many of the other combined contraceptive pills in this comparison guide, as it should be taken at around the same time each day for 21 days then stopped for 7 days. You should then start the next blister strip and carry on in this pattern. NuvaRing

This form of combined contraception is very different from the other types mentioned in this guide as it comes in the form of a ring as opposed to an oral tablet. The NuvaRing is designed to be put inside the vagina on a specific day during your cycle and then left inside for 3 weeks. After the 3 weeks, you should take the NuvaRing out for 7 days and dispose of it. Once the 7 days are up you should insert another new NuvaRing and continue with this cycle. This form of combined contraception was prescribed 16,010 times by NHS England in the year ending August 2019.

Ovranette 

Ovranette was prescribed 30,589 times by NHS England in the 12 months leading up to August 2019. It’s similar to other contraceptive pills in that it should be taken at around the same time every day for 21 days, before having a 7-day break and then continuing with the next strip. Qlaira 

Qlaira is a type of combined contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy. NHS England prescribed Qlaira 9,450 times between September 2018 and August 2019. Qlaira is slightly different from other combined contraceptive medications as it contains 26 active tablets and 2 inactive ‘dummy’ pills. You should take this medication around the same time every day. Rigevidon 

1,023,779 prescriptions for Rigevidon were written in the last year (ending August 2019) by the NHS in England, making it the most prescribed form of combined contraceptive pill on our list. After 21 days you should then have a 7-day break between finishing your last blister strip and starting a new one.
