If you’re embarrassed by the thought of being tested by a doctor or nurse, self testing kits allow you to do this in the comfort of your home. Most STI tests will need to be sent to our partner lab for results, however, we do offer the BioSURE HIV Self Test and Female Chlamydia Test which provide results at home in just 15 minutes. If you’re using the HIV and Chlamydia test kits which provide results at home you will need to see a health profession to receive treatment and advice.

Why are these at home STI testing kits so important?

Testing for sexually transmitted infections should be easily accessible. There is a stigma around sexually transmitted infections which prevents many people from getting tested. At home STI testing kits allow those who have had unprotected sex but are fearful of visiting the sexual health clinic for testing to give themselves peace of mind by using at home testing kits.

STIs are spread through unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex, and through sharing sex toys. It’s important to get tested for STIs regularly as they can lead to complications if left untreated. If you’re results come back positive for an STI Doctor-4-U have medication readily available so being treatment straight away and avoid complications. Most STIs are treated with antibiotics, however, if your results come back positive for HIV you should visit your GP to discuss your treatment plan.

How are STIs tested at home?

To test for sexually transmitted infections a blood or urine sample will be taken. Some STIs may also need a swab test which are carried out at a sexual health clinic or GP surgery. The female chlamydia test allows you to swab yourself at home. The swab and urine samples are used to test bacterial infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and trichomonas vaginalis.

Liver, bowel and stomach ulcer testing

At home testing kits can also be used to test the health of some vital organs such as the liver, bowel and stomach. Liver function test kits check the health of the liver, looking for signs of infection or inflammation, and that it is working how it should. Taking some medications may require you to have regular liver function tests to ensure the medicine is not affecting the liver in any way. Liver function tests can also help in detecting other underlying health conditions.

The bowel health test is used to detect polyps in the colon, which will not usually present noticeable symptoms and can only be discovered through testing. A stool is tested for traces of blood as polyps can burst and bleed. The sample is mixed with a solution to detect polyps but you do not have to send this sample to a lab, instead results are produced at home in as little as 5 minutes. As polyps can become cancerous, these quick at home bowel screening kits are potentially life saving as they could detect the early signs of bowel cancer and prompt you to visit your GP.

Testing for stomach ulcers can also be carried out at home. Stomach ulcers can cause severe pain and discomfort and the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers could eventually lead to more serious complications such as stomach cancer. The at home testing kit can detect this type of bacteria known as Helicbacter pylori (or H. pylori). Blood is taken from a finger prick and results are shown in 10 minutes, there is no need to send the sample to a laboratory.

Multi drug testing

Drug testing is used in certain jobs or if you’re a sports person and need to declare that you’re body is free from drugs. To find out if you have drugs in your system you can use our home testing kit which checks for a variety of drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, amphetamine, opiates, benzodiazepines, and methamphetamine. The test can be carried out at home via a urine sample and results are given 5 minutes after.

Gluten sensitivity test

Coeliac disease is caused by the body’s intolerance to gluten and symptoms can include diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence, bloating, and digestive problems. You can check whether you have coeliac disease at home using the gluten sensitivity test which involves a blood sample taken from the finger and reliably tests for the disease without being sent to a lab, results are produced at home in 5 minutes.

Are the home testing kits accurate?

All of the tests we provide have a high accuracy rate of 90% and above, and this is increased when results are sent to a lab.

What happens next?

What happens next depends on the results. If it’s required that your sample needs to be sent to our partner lab you will receive results via our online portal. The whole process from ordering your test kit, to sending samples to the lab and receiving results can all be done within 7 days if the sample is sent straight away.

Tests which do not require samples to the lab can produce results within minutes. If results come back as positive we can direct you to the best treatment for your condition which will be approved by our GMC registered doctors. Some conditions, however, may need a follow up appointment with a medical profession, for example, if you have positive results for HIV or polyps.
