Yasmin

Yasmin is a prescription medication known as an oral contraceptive, of which there are dozens of variations. Also known as “The Pill”, oral contraceptives belong to the family of contraceptives known as hormonal contraceptives, as they manipulate the body’s hormones to prevent pregnancy. Yasmin is called a combined pill as it contains both an oestrogen and a progestogen hormone. The Pill is one of the most reliable forms of reversible protection, and doesn’t interrupt sex, making it one of the most popular types of contraception. As it alters your hormones to have its effect, there may be some side effects in the form of mood swings. However, it has the advantage that it can be stopped immediately if the side effects are too much.

If you know Yasmin is right for you, you can buy it online safely from a UK doctor such as Doctor-4-U by completing our simple medical questionnaire and getting a certified prescription. .

  • You should take ONE tablet at the same time each day for 21 days, followed by 7 days of not taking any tablets before repeating the cycle. However, if you take a hormonal contraceptive that is designed to be taken every day (also known as an "ED" pill), you should not take a 7 day break after day 21.
  • Always take your tablet at the same time each day
  • If you miss a dose or take your tablet later than you should, read the patient information leaflet or speak to a GP or pharmacist for advice, as you may not be protected against pregnancy.
  • If you experience vomiting or severe diarrhoea, this medication may not work effectively. Because of this, it's recommended that you use condoms or other barrier methods for 7 days after you've experienced illnesses like these.

How does Yasmin work?

Yasmin contains two active ingredients. The first of these is ethinylestradiol, a synthetic version of a naturally occurring oestrogen hormone, and the second is drospirenone, a type of progestogen hormone. These work in combination to stop an egg being released into the ovaries and then fertilised.

As Yasmin does not help protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), you should also use a condom for to ensure safer sex, and you should take an STI test every time you have a new sexual partner.

Who is Yasmin suitable for?

Although Yasmin is designed for women over the age of puberty and before the age of menopause who want to prevent pregnancy, your medical history may mean it isn’t right for you.

You should not take Yasmin if:

  • You are allergic to ethinylestradiol, drospirenone or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet
  • You are pregnant
  • You or your family have a history of blood clots
  • You have had angina, a heart attack or a stroke
  • You have had breast cancer, or cancer of the genital organs
  • You have bad migraines
  • You have severe chronic liver disease
  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding

Like all medications, Yasmin may have side effects, but not everyone gets them. Common side effects include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Changes to your period
  • Depression and mood swings
  • Headaches

Taking Yasmin increases your chance of getting a blood clot, which can be very dangerous. Seek medical attention immediately if you think you may have developed a blood clot. Blood clots are more likely:

  • With increasing age
  • If you smoke
  • If you are overweight
  • If you have high blood pressure
  • If a close relative has had a heart attack or stroke at a young age
  • If you have a high level of fat in your blood
  • If you get migraines
  • If you have a problem with your heart
  • If you have diabetes

There is a possible small link between Yasmin and breast cancer, which you can read about in the patient information leaflet.

Yasmin is known as a 21-day pill, which means you take one pill per day for 21 days until the blister pack is finished, then start the next pack after 7 days. When you begin taking Yasmin, take the first pill on the first day of your period. Make sure you take Yasmin at a similar time of day each day. The patient information leaflet contains information on what to do if you miss a pill.
