Details

What is Sildenafil and what does it do?

Sildenafil is the generic version of the branded medicine Viagra. Like Viagra, Sildenafil is indicated in men with erectile dysfunction. It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis to allow blood to flow more freely and generate an erection.

Erectile dysfunction is a common condition in adult and older men. Erectile dysfunction may be caused by anxiety, depression or relationship problems, but can also be related to physical causes, such as hormonal problems or narrowing of the blood vessels going to the penis.

When is Sildenafil prescribed?

Sildenafil may be prescribed if you are suffering from erectile dysfunction. Before taking sildenafil it is important that you have seen your doctor about the condition. Sildenafil may be considered once any underlying causes have been addressed, such as illness or poor health.

Sildenafil only works with sexual stimulation. It will not give an erection unless you are sexually aroused.

Is Sildenafil suitable for my condition?

Sildenafil may be suitable for your condition. The suitability will be assessed by our doctors. If you are an adult man having had erection problems for 6 months or longer, Sildenafil may be prescribed following an online medical consultation.

Note, there are certain medicines and conditions that may affect the suitability of Sildenafil. This treatment may not be safe and suitable for you if any of the below applies to you:

  • If you are taking nitrates for angina pectoris (chest pain)
  • If you are taking nitric oxide donors (“poppers”)
  • If you are taking riociguat to treat high blood pressure in the lungs
  • If you have severe heart or liver problems or recently had a heart attack or stroke
  • If you have low blood pressure
  • If you have a deformity of your penis or Peyronie’s Disease

Please note, the above is not a complete list of conditions and medicines. Always read the patient information leaflet before requesting a prescription. Ensure to include any medication you are taking when filling in the medical questionnaire.

Sildenafil doses for men

The recommended starting dose of sildenafil is 50mg taken one hour before intercourse or sexual activity.

Do not take Sildenafil more than once in any 24 hour period.

Does Sildenafil cause any side effects?

Just like all medicines, sildenafil may cause side effects. However, not everyone will experience them.

It is important that you read though the patient information leaflet before taking sildenafil so that you know how to recognise side effects and what to do if they become uncomfortable.

Common side effects associated with the use of sildenafil include:

  • Headache
  • Facial flushing
  • Indigestion
  • Stuffy nose
  • Dizziness

Contact your GP or nearest surgery immediately if you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, including sudden wheezing, difficulty breathing or swelling of the eyelids, face lips or throat.

Can I reduce the risk of getting side effects?
